I'd be embarassed, too...

Ever notice how on the Discovery Channel's reconstruction TV shows (plane crashes, natural disasters, etc...), the only one to have a blurb mentioning how some people's names have been changed to protect their identities is the one which reconstructs supposed paranormal events, A Haunting?

It's not to protect those people from harm like in crime reconstruction shows where somebody might get killed if their role was known in bringing down a major criminal. The only possibility is to protect them from embarrassment. I don't even know why the Discovery Channel even runs this crap - it's not like it's real science, but then again, the whole quality of their programming seems to be going down hill.

Take Daily Planet, for example. More and more they are rerunning segments from a few months ago, and not just during the summer hiatus. Such a shame too. DC used to be my favorite cable channel.

Ringerworld's Children by Larry Niven

When I started this book I was worried that I would find it as boring as The Ringworld Throne was Well, I was not disappointed.

This book actually has some action and the plot moves along nicely. I knew that Louis Wu was going to become a Protector in this novel, but I didn't expect what woudl happen after that. The end is let open for more Louis Wu stories, but not really more Louis on Ringworld ones (unless Niven really wants to stretch things).

I give it 3.8 out of 5.

The Ringworld Throne by Larry Niven

This one is even slower in getting off the ground than Ringworld Engineers. So much time is spent with Valavirgillin and her crew doing almost nothing integral to the plot. The chapters with Louis Wu also seem to be almost totally unnecessary. Whether it was getting the webeye into the hands of the Ghouls, or getting Louis Wu negotiating with the Hindmost and them teamed up again, all of that could have been half as long with little or no detriment to the story, IMNSHO.

The original Ringworld book was one that made me want to keep reading, making me lose sleep some nights. This book took me two weeks to read and it was more of a chore than anything to pick it up for an hour before going to bed. I give it a 2.2 out of 5. Next I will be reading Ringworld's Children and I hope it will be better.

This is just... horrible...

We all know that Japan is pro-whaling, even for species which are endangered. Indeed, the more endangered a species is, the more of a delicacy its meat seems to be in Japan.

Now no killing of animals for meat is a cute and cuddly process, but this video of a dolphin harvest in Japan is nothing short of disturbing. I warn you, if you are easily upset you may not want to watch that video.

I think that I am going to be writing my Member of Parliament and a few other government officials to encourage them to place pressure on Japan about this.

Found a YASPT (yet another silly personality test) while surfing. However, rather than telling you "You're a leader who likes to forge their own path" type of thing it marks you off as which stereotypical personality of choral/soloist range you fit into.

It told me that I am a Baritone, though in reality my vocal range is (second) Tenor. However at church I usually do sing the bass part because I find that easier to pick out from the piano accompaniment.

You scored as Baritone. As a Baritone, you are a background character. However, just because people don't notice you doesn't mean you don't notice them. You have strong passions for single things. You are stealthy and in the know, and when you want something, you know how to get it. Just take care not to get too obsessive!

I might as well join the cult...

Well, everybody else that I know with a blog is doing it, so I might as well get in there with all the other sheep.
